Managing sweetness

UNESDA convened the Managing Sweetness conference in Brussels in June 2006 to bring together leading nutrition scientists, industry and regulators to focus on how to change behaviour and find effective answers as part of the ongoing efforts within the EU platform on diet, physical activity and health.

The Managing Sweetness conference was organised by Boston based Oldways Preservation Trust in the framework of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity & Health, and was supported by a number of its members, including the Union of European Beverage Associations (UNESDA), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the European Food Information Council (Eufic) as well as the International Sweeteners Association.

“Managing sweetness” is a promising new approach, and is based directly on public health programmes that demonstrate long term success. In general, these are not “prohibition” programmes that ask consumers to stop consuming foods and drinks that they favour. Instead, they help consumers learn techniques that help them manage all their consumption behaviours wisely, and also engage in regular physical activity.

The conference concluded with a scientific consensus on managing sweetness.
